Research and Software Development Company APM used to be a division of the Innovation Centre of the Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman and it became an independent entity in October 1992. It was dealing with software development for automatic machine design. This activity is reflected in its name which is the abbreviation “APM” from “Avtomatizirovannoe Proektirovanie Mashyn” (Automated Machine Design in English). By that time APM produced a version of the automated design system for engineering calculations of machine parts and units.

Historically the work on the automated design system began much earlier, namely, in the beginning of 1980-s when one of the company founders was dealing with quite interesting problems - prediction of equipment accuracy that was important for the country economics. By that time he managed to develop analytical methods helping to define accuracy of equipment at the design stage.

Also there was an opportunity to control accuracy by analyzing impact of different parameters and it eventually helped to create high accuracy machines. Theoretically, the activity in this area logically completed by creations of a software complex which is successfully applied in design. It is certain that there were no similar software products in the world and now there are no such products. Thus, we can say that these software products have no world-class competitors.

Besides scientific studies, APM was the first to create laboratory and practical trainings in design. This work was performed at the Department of Design Principles of the Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman and was initiated by APM General Director, Professor Vladimir Shelofast. It means that it was done without financing. Now it is difficult to imagine the level of computer equipment at that time but in spite of this fact many calculation ideas were born back then.

In recent years when personal computers appeared, this work got a new impulse and it was the reason to develop more perfect software. Pascal was used as the basic programming language and MS DOS as an operating system. The MS DOS version was named APM and existed not a long time.

Such situation lasted until 1992. Since that time all works in MS DOS stopped and we began to work with MS Windows. In 1992 the product was also renamed and got the name APM WinMachine. C was used as a programming language and later - C++.

This was the beginning of the modern automated design system APM WinMachine which is successfully sold now in the software market. Next years were devoted to creating a full CAE product and its active implementation at industrial companies and technical universities.

In 1996 the finite element analysis software for structures and parts was included into the system. These programs are upgraded and improved every year. At that time there were also the first attempts to create a full scale distribution network. Before that APM WinMachine system was sold only by the APM Centre.

Since 1998 the system was efficiently used for calculation and design of construction facilities and it was possible dues to creation of such modules as APM WinFrame3D and APM WinStructure3D.

Since the beginning of 2000 when a carpet plot graphic editor was added into the system, APM WinMachine became a valid CAD/CAE product. System developers set the task to create a tool for end-to-end automation of process preparation including not only CAD/CAE modules but also a possibility of technical preparation of process. We are constrained by the lack of a full-scale three-dimensional editor and we work on it at full speed.

A foreign distribution network was formed in 2000. Now besides distributors in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States we have an active distributor – DESIGN MECHA CO. LTD, a South Korean company that received exclusive rights on APM WinMachine in South-Eastern Asian markets.
